Client Advisory 3.06.26: Middle East Conflict Disrupting Ocean & Air Freight

Escalating military tensions involving Iran continue to impact global transportation networks. Ocean carriers and airlines are adjusting operations due to security concerns, resulting in service disruptions, longer transit times, and potential capacity constraints across both ocean and air freight.

Ocean Freight Disruptions

Security concerns around key maritime chokepoints are forcing carriers to suspend services and reroute vessels.

Key developments include:

  • Strait of Hormuz: Commercial vessel movement has largely halted, limiting access to Persian Gulf ports in the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia.
  • Suez Canal & Red Sea: Several carriers have paused transits through the Suez Canal and Bab el-Mandeb Strait, diverting vessels around the Cape of Good Hope.
  • Eastern Mediterranean: Some services are being withdrawn or restructured, leading to blank sailings, skipped port calls, and rising congestion at transshipment hubs.

Potential impacts:

  • Transit times extended by 10–20 days on some routes
  • Blank sailings and cargo rollovers
  • Tightened vessel capacity and equipment shortages
  • Emergency conflict and war risk surcharges

Air Freight Impacts

Airlines are also adjusting operations due to airspace restrictions and security concerns.

Shippers may see:

  • Reduced capacity as flights reroute around restricted airspace
  • Potential shipment delays
  • Higher fuel costs impacting air freight surcharges
  • Ongoing routing and schedule adjustments

Cargo Insurance Considerations

Shipments moving through conflict-affected regions may be subject to war risk insurance restrictions or additional premiums. Shippers should confirm their coverage before moving cargo through impacted areas.

Advisory for Customers

Given the evolving situation, shippers should:

  • Allow additional transit time
  • Expect schedule volatility and possible surcharges
  • Work with logistics partners to evaluate alternative routings

We are actively monitoring carrier advisories and will provide further updates as the situation develops. If you have shipments moving through the region, please contact your representative to discuss contingency planning.
